Sony delivered a packed day of PlayStation news with a rare State of Play double header, bringing announcements, trailers, release dates, DLC reveals and updates across its global and Japan-focused presentations. While the showcases did not feature one massive surprise capable of dominating the entire gaming calendar, they still offered plenty for PS5 and PS4 players to look forward to.

Among the biggest highlights were new looks at Marvel’s Wolverine, Ghost of Yōtei, Crimson Desert, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and Until Dawn 2. Sony also revealed limited-edition Grand Theft Auto 6 DualSense controllers, while several smaller titles brought some of the more unusual ideas of the showcases.

The Japan presentation added even more games to the list, including Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, Fate/Extra Record, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, and several upcoming action RPGs.

Here is everything important announced during the PlayStation State of Play double header.

Marvel’s Wolverine Gets Another Look Ahead of September Release

Sony opened one of its major presentation segments with another trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, giving fans another reminder that Insomniac Games’ highly anticipated superhero project is almost here.

The new footage showcased Wolverine in action and reinforced the game’s darker, aggressive tone. Insomniac, the studio behind the modern Spider-Man games, is developing the title exclusively for PS5.

Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to launch on September 15, 2026.

For PlayStation fans, it remains one of Sony’s most important first-party releases of the year.

Ghost of Yōtei Adds a New Survival Experience

Ghost of Yōtei received one of the more substantial updates during the showcase.

Sony revealed Most Wanted, a roguelike combat survival mode that introduces a different way to experience the game’s combat. The structure has similarities to the No Return mode from The Last of Us Part II Remastered, with players facing repeated combat challenges and attempting to survive increasingly difficult encounters.

Interestingly, players will also be able to play as Jin Sakai, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima.

Most Wanted will launch on October 1, alongside the game’s paid expansion and complete edition.

For fans who enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima and want more combat-focused gameplay beyond the main story, the new mode could provide a significant reason to return.

Ghost of Yōtei Story Expansion Revealed

The Japan-focused State of Play also closed with a new trailer for Echoes of Sekigahara, a story expansion for Ghost of Yōtei.

The footage offered a glimpse at another chapter of the game’s world, with the expansion continuing the game’s cinematic presentation and samurai-inspired setting.

Sony has positioned Ghost of Yōtei as one of its major PlayStation experiences, and the new expansion should give players another reason to revisit the game after completing the main campaign.

Crimson Desert Gets Charting the Unknown Expansion

Crimson Desert also received major news.

Developer Pearl Abyss announced Charting the Unknown, a new expansion for the action RPG. The DLC is scheduled to arrive on October 15.

The announcement comes as Crimson Desert continues to attract attention as one of the year’s major open-world action games. The expansion should add additional content for players who have already spent significant time exploring its large fantasy world.

For a game built around exploration, combat and a broad open-world setting, an expansion focused on discovering more of that world feels like a natural next step.

Metro 2039 Gets February 2027 Release Date

Fans of the Metro franchise received a new look at Metro 2039, running on PS5 Pro.

The footage once again highlighted the series’ signature atmosphere, with dark environments, intense first-person combat and a bleak post-apocalyptic world.

Developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver also narrowed down the release window.

Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

The PS5 Pro footage also provided a technical showcase of what players can expect from the next chapter of the long-running first-person shooter franchise.

Maneater 2 Announced

One of the more unexpected announcements was Maneater 2.

The sequel follows the 2020 action RPG in which players take control of a shark and explore an open environment while growing stronger by attacking various targets.

The new game is scheduled to arrive in 2027.

There was no need for an elaborate explanation to get attention for this one. The idea of returning to a shark-based action RPG remains unusual enough to stand out among the many conventional announcements.

Final Fantasy Resonance Brings HD-2D to the Series

Square Enix showed Final Fantasy Resonance, described as the first HD-2D game in the Final Fantasy franchise.

The turn-based RPG combines classic role-playing elements with modern HD-2D visuals, a presentation style that has become increasingly associated with Square Enix’s retro-inspired RPG projects.

The game is scheduled to release on October 22, and a demo is already available.

Players interested in traditional turn-based combat will have an opportunity to try the experience before deciding whether to purchase the full game.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Gets Extended Showcase

Square Enix also delivered one of the most anticipated segments of the presentation with an extended look at Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

Nearly 10 minutes of footage from the final installment of the remake trilogy was shown, giving fans a much deeper look at what is coming next.

The game is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027.

Players who have not yet experienced the previous games have some time to catch up with Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth before the trilogy reaches its conclusion.

The extended presentation was particularly significant because the final chapter carries the responsibility of bringing together the story established across the first two games.

Until Dawn 2 Gets January Release Date

Another major reveal was Until Dawn 2, a narrative horror sequel centered around player choices.

The new game will arrive on PS5 on January 28, 2027.

AdHoc Studio is involved with the story, adding some interesting talent to the project. The studio previously gained attention for its work on Dispatch, making its involvement particularly notable for players who enjoyed that game’s writing.

As with the original Until Dawn, player decisions are expected to influence the direction of the story, making multiple playthroughs potentially worthwhile.

GTA 6 Gets Limited-Edition DualSense Controllers

Although Sony did not reveal anything new about the game itself, Grand Theft Auto 6 still managed to make an appearance.

Sony announced limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers in black and white.

The controllers are priced at $85, putting them above the standard DualSense price while giving GTA fans a collectible option ahead of the game’s launch.

The announcement also served as another reminder that Rockstar’s hugely anticipated open-world title is getting closer.

LEGO PlayStation 1 Set Announced

LEGO has also entered the retro gaming nostalgia market with a new PlayStation 1 building set.

The set recreates Sony’s original console and is priced at $180. It will be available on October 1.

The announcement came shortly after news of a LEGO set based on the original Xbox, making this another interesting crossover between classic console nostalgia and modern collectible building sets.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Revealed

Capcom announced Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, an upcoming expansion for the action RPG.

The expansion is currently planned for 2027.

More information was also provided during the Japan presentation, while attendees at Tokyo Game Show are expected to get an opportunity to try a public demo of the expansion.

For Monster Hunter Wilds players, the expansion represents the next major step for the game following its existing content updates.

Gundam Rogue Orbit Gets Release Date

Gundam Rogue Orbit also received a release date during the showcase.

The action game is coming to PS5, Steam and Xbox Series X/S on March 5, 2027.

The Japan-focused presentation provided additional details about the title, giving Gundam fans a closer look at its gameplay and overall direction.

New Indie Games Bring Some of the Most Interesting Ideas

Sony also highlighted several smaller projects during the presentation.

Hunter’s Moon is a narrative-focused game that takes place over the course of a single night. It has a gloomy visual style and is scheduled for October 26, 2026.

Uncanyon, from Annapurna Interactive and the studio behind Maquette, is an isometric puzzle game set in a strange fantasy world. Its environments change and transform as the player explores, creating an intriguing visual and gameplay concept. The game is expected in 2027.

Meanwhile, Keeper, developed by the newly independent Double Fine, is available on PS5 now. Players take control of a lighthouse in an adventure that combines exploration with a distinctly unusual premise.

Konami Reveals Rev.Noir and Rhapsony in Scarlet

Konami brought two interesting projects to the presentation.

Rev.Noir is an RPG scheduled to arrive in 2027.

The company also showcased Rhapsony in Scarlet, a fantasy action RPG with a particularly unusual setting. The game takes place in 1920s New York, combining a period-inspired environment with magic, mafia elements and a jazzy soundtrack.

There is currently no announced release window for Rhapsony in Scarlet.

The concept immediately makes it one of the more distinctive new games shown during the double header.

Saros Gets Major Free Update

Sony’s upcoming sci-fi action game Saros is also getting a substantial update later this year.

The free update will introduce new accessibility features, including gyroscopic aiming and an option to slow down gameplay.

Players can also expect a competitive boss rush mode, allowing them to take on giant enemies using a chosen loadout.

A New Game+ mode is also coming, bringing new modifiers, progression options and additional secrets.

The update should provide additional replayability for players who have already completed the main experience.

Gran Turismo 7 Is Getting More Content

Sony confirmed that Gran Turismo 7 is not finished receiving major content.

A two-part update is planned, with the first portion arriving next month and the second scheduled for December.

Among the additions are the Sugo circuit, based on the famous Japanese motorsport facility, and an expanded version of Autumn Ring, a familiar location for longtime Gran Turismo fans.

Sony also confirmed 12 new cars and online drift trials.

For a racing game that has continued receiving content years after release, the update demonstrates Sony’s ongoing support for Gran Turismo 7.

PlayStation Plus Adds More Games

The presentation also included several PlayStation Plus announcements.

Co-op looter shooter Mycopunk will join the Premium and Extra tiers in the coming months.

The Classic Catalog is also expanding, with Mega Man X: Command Mission arriving for Premium subscribers this month.

Later this year, subscribers can expect Dino Crisis 2 and the original Ratchet & Clank.

The addition of Dino Crisis 2 is particularly notable because the franchise has long remained a favorite among fans of Capcom’s classic survival-action games.

State of Play Japan: Dragon Ball, Fate and More

The Japan-focused presentation delivered its own collection of announcements.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 was revealed and is scheduled for 2027, bringing another multiplayer action-adventure experience to the franchise.

Fate/Extra Record, a long-awaited remake of the 2010 dungeon-crawling RPG, finally received a release date. It will launch on January 28, 2027, for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is also coming to PS5 for the first time, with a release date of December 3, 2026.

Fans of The Eminence in Shadow can look forward to The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes, an action RPG scheduled for next year.

The popular soccer manga and anime Blue Lock is also crossing over with Rematch. The event runs from September 24 through October 23.

More Japanese Games Announced

Cygames introduced Where the Seeds Fall, the first project from its smaller-scale CygamesEdge label. The action-adventure game focuses heavily on vertical exploration and is set around a World Tree that represents humanity’s final refuge from a Blight-corrupted Earth.

It is scheduled for November 5 on PS5, Switch 2 and Steam, with the main story expected to take around three hours.

Another intriguing announcement was World Phasebound Control Authority, a co-op monster-hunting action game set in Seoul. No release date has been announced.

Stupid Never Dies combines zombies and vampires in another action RPG. A lengthy demo is available now, ahead of its October 21 release.

SlashZero is a side-scrolling roguelike featuring anime-inspired visuals and a protagonist known as a Timehacker. It has a spring 2027 release window.

Bandai Namco also announced upcoming expansions for Echoes of Aincrad and Digimon Story Time Stranger. The latter will add approximately 50 new Digimon next year.

Crown of No Quarter and Daba: Land of Water Scar

Crown of No Quarter, also known as CONQ, is an action game featuring naval combat, exploration and large-scale battles.

Players can sail between locations, use a glider to board enemy ships and participate in ground-based battles. Magical abilities can even be used to resurrect defeated allies.

The game is currently scheduled for 2027.

Daba: Land of Water Scar, meanwhile, looks like a Soulslike-inspired action RPG with fast combat and detailed animations. It is planned for a spring 2027 release.

A Busy Day for PlayStation Fans

Sony’s State of Play double header may not have delivered one enormous surprise announcement, but the sheer number of games, expansions and updates made it an important showcase for PlayStation players.

From Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei to Until Dawn 2, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Crimson Desert and Metro 2039, there are major releases spread across the next several months and into 2027.

The Japan presentation added even more variety, particularly for fans of Japanese RPGs, anime adaptations and action games.

With new first-party releases, third-party blockbusters, indie experiments, classic games coming to PlayStation Plus and even a GTA 6-themed DualSense, Sony used the double State of Play to demonstrate that the PlayStation pipeline remains unusually crowded.

For players deciding what to watch next, the release calendar may be the biggest takeaway: September and October alone are packed with major games and expansions, while 2027 is already shaping up to be another busy year for PS5.
